Orthodox Christianity on the Island of Kauai
Rekindling the Light of Ancient Faith in the Garden Isle
The island of Kauai, renowned for its natural beauty and deep sense of spiritual wonder, holds a unique place in the history of Orthodoxy in the Pacific. Over two centuries ago, in 1815, the Russian Orthodox Church's Mission first set foot on Hawaiian soil right here on Kauai, establishing a Christian presence rooted in the timeless and apostolic faith of the Orthodox Church.
Reestablished in 2017, a small but growing group of faithful Orthodox Christians—residents, inquirers, and pilgrims—are humbly gathering in prayer on this sacred island. Through the grace of God, and with the blessing of the Holy Orthodox Church, we are working toward the establishment of a permanent Orthodox Christian parish on Kauai: a spiritual home where the Divine Liturgy is offered, sacraments are celebrated, and the fullness of the Orthodox faith is lived and proclaimed.
Our vision is to build not just a church building, but a community—a spiritual oasis where the ancient faith of the Apostles is preserved and offered to all who seek the truth, beauty, and holiness of Christ’s Holy Church.
If you live on Kauai, are an Orthodox Christian visiting the island, or are simply seeking to learn more about the Orthodox faith, we warmly invite you to join us in prayer, fellowship, and the sacred work of planting the Church on the Garden Isle.

Orthodox Christianity is not merely a set of doctrines or rituals—it is a living encounter with Christ through the life of the Church. As we grow in knowledge of the Orthodox faith, we are not just accumulating information; we are being invited into a deeper relationship with God. Understanding the teachings, liturgical life, and spiritual practices of the Church helps us to more fully participate in her sacred mysteries, especially the Divine Liturgy.
Through study, prayer, and immersion in the life of the Church, we begin to see with spiritual eyes and experience the beauty and depth of the Orthodox faith. This journey is not only about learning, but about transformation—drawing closer to Christ and becoming more fully who we are called to be in Him.
Welcome to this series exploring the rich and profound history of Orthodox Christianity. Spanning over two millennia, the Orthodox Church traces its roots directly to the apostles and the earliest Christian communities. Its history is a story of faithfulness, struggle, beauty, and perseverance—marked by councils, saints, empires, and a living tradition that continues to shape the lives of millions today.
In this series, we will journey through key moments in the life of the Church—from the apostolic era and the early ecumenical councils, to the rise of Byzantium, the Great Schism, the spread of Orthodoxy to Slavic lands, and the challenges faced under Ottoman and communist rule. We will also examine how Orthodoxy has taken root in the modern world, including its growing presence in the West.
This is not just a historical overview—it is an invitation to see how the hand of God has guided His Church through the centuries. By understanding the past, we gain a clearer vision of what it means to live as Orthodox Christians today.
Join us as we uncover the story of a Church that remains timeless, yet ever relevant: the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church.

“Come and see.” (John 1:46)
The Orthodox Christian faith is not merely a body of teachings or a system of morals, but a way of life—a journey of the heart, mind, and soul into communion with the living God. On the Way, a foundational course developed by the Institute for Orthodox Christian Studies in Cambridge, England, offers seekers, catechumens, and those newly received into the Church a clear and prayerful introduction to the path of Orthodox Christianity.
Designed under the blessing and guidance of Orthodox theologians, priests, and educators, this course explores the central themes of the Orthodox faith: Holy Scripture and Tradition, the Sacraments, the Church as the Body of Christ, the life of prayer, and the transformative power of repentance and theosis (union with God). Each session is deeply rooted in the teaching of the Church Fathers and the living liturgical experience of the Orthodox Church.
Accessible yet profound, On the Way is particularly suited for those who are discerning entrance into the Church, or for those who wish to deepen their understanding of the ancient Christian Faith. With structured readings, video lectures, and guided discussions, the course invites participants not only to learn about Orthodoxy, but to encounter it—to walk on the way that leads to Life.
May this course serve as a lamp to the feet of all who seek the Light of Christ, “the True Light which enlighteneth every man that cometh into the world” (John 1:9).
The Saint James Orthodox Catechism Series
Rooted in Scripture. Enlightened by the Fathers. Lived in the Church.
Named in honor of the Holy Apostle James, the Brother of the Lord and first Bishop of Jerusalem, the Saint James Orthodox Catechism Series is a comprehensive instructional program for inquirers, catechumens, and newly illumined Orthodox Christians. Designed to form not merely the intellect, but the heart and soul of the faithful, this series presents the ancient and unchanging truths of the Orthodox Christian Faith with clarity, reverence, and pastoral warmth.
Structured as a progressive journey of formation, the series is divided into multiple stages, beginning with foundational teachings on the Creed, the Sacraments, and the Liturgical life of the Church, and moving toward deeper engagement with Holy Scripture, the writings of the Church Fathers, and the ascetical and spiritual disciplines of the Orthodox life. At every level, the series emphasizes not only what the Church teaches, but how the faithful are called to live that teaching in repentance, humility, and love.
Each unit of the series includes:
The Saint James Orthodox Catechism Series may be used in parish catechism classes, mission settings, homeschooling environments, or one-on-one pastoral instruction. Its aim is to prepare the faithful not only to profess the Orthodox Faith, but to enter deeply into the life of the Church—the Body of Christ—through prayer, worship, and sacramental participation.
As Saint James himself exhorts us: “Be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves” (James 1:22). May this catechism series assist all who undertake it in becoming true disciples of the Lord, grounded in Holy Tradition and growing in the likeness of Christ.
